Answers toFrequently Asked Questions
Table of Contents
What is Latex?Latex is a milky white liquid composed of rubber particles dispersed in water. This material is whipped with air to form a foam, which is cured to make our mattresses. Back to Top
What's so good about Latex?Latex is naturally conforming, so you are assured optimal orthopedic support in any sleep position. This unique ability to conform to your body alleviates areas of high pressure that cause you to toss and turn at night. Latex is also hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial, dust-mite resistant and breathable. Because it breathes to remove body moisture, it keeps you warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer. Is your latex 100% latex?Yes! Back to Top
What's the difference between your latex and Sears' latex? We sell both of these products. Talatech latex is the finest latex available anywhere. It is an optimum combination of natural and synthetic latex engineered to provide the best in comfort and longevity. Sears' latex is 100% synthetic latex. While it is a good product, it will not have the longevity and durability of Talatech latex. Back to Top
What's the difference between your latex and Englander's latex? Our latex is an optimum combination of natural and synthetic latex engineered to provide the best in comfort and longevity. Englander's latex is made of 100% natural latex imported from a third world country. Testing shows that it is more prone to body impressions. Back to Top
Why is it a blend of natural and synthetic? It is blended for optimum performance. Just like many products are a blend of natural and synthetic components. In our case, it makes the product last longer and be more comfortable. Back to Top
How can you call it 100% latex if it's a blend of natural and synthetic?Latex is a rubber particle suspended in water by soap. Whether it's man made or straight from the rubber tree, it is still latex. Man made latex is just a rubber particle suspended in water by soap that was made in a lab. We can make a 100% natural product, but it just doesn't last as long as our blend. Back to Top
What other stuff is added to your latex?Unlike some competing products, our product contains no fillers or extenders. We only add the components needed to convert the material from a liquid to a solid that lasts. We add soap, ammonia, zinc oxide and sulfur. The ammonia evaporates and the soap and zinc oxide are washed out. The sulfur is needed to cure the product so that it bounces back after you sleep on it. Back to Top
I heard about latex allergies, can this hurt me?Absolutely not. The problems you have heard of are related to medical latex products. The key culprit is a protein in natural latex that is not present in properly produced latex. Our blend of latex, processed the way we do, contains none of these proteins that cause allergic reactions. We are the largest maker of latex Cosmetic Sponges in the world and have never had an allergic reaction. With this track record, you can be assured you won't have a problem. Besides, with the cover, you never contact the product. Back to Top
Isn't this the same as Urethane or Furniture Foam? What's the difference? No, our product is not the same as urethane or furniture foam. Urethane is a plastic. It doesn't have the longevity and resiliency of rubber. They don't make rubber bands or tires out of urethane (plastic), because urethane can't stretch and return to shape like rubber. In short, when worked, they lose resiliency and shape. The just won't give you the same comfort a year from now that they do in the showroom. Urethane foams are also made from isocyanates, and can give off deadly hydrogen cyanide gas in a fire. Our product is rubber and has all the resiliency inherent in rubber. Back to Top
Is Infinilux latex? No, they are advertising it as a latex like product. It is actually a plastic foam, a polyurethane. Back to Top
Why wasn't latex available for so long? Is there something wrong with it?There is absolutely nothing wrong with latex. It was big back in the 60's, until the introduction of urethane. The large manufacturers of latex were primarily interested in automotive foam, and as urethane replaced latex in car seats, they dropped out of the market. Latex is heavier than urethane, making it last much longer in bedding. In car seats, the extra weight becomes a problem for those worried about gas mileage. Back to Top
Why is it so expensive? It is expensive because it is pure latex rubber, and it is the best latex foam bedding available. It is a premium blend of natural and synthetic. It is very unlike polyurethane, which is a plastic and much cheaper and lighter than latex foam. Because this product lasts a lifetime, it really isn't more expensive in the long run. It's actually cheaper. Back to Top
What kind of frame do I need? You need a four-legged frame for a twin and full size mattress. For a queen and king size mattress, you need a six-legged frame. Middle support for any type of mattress is very important, so that it doesn't sag in the middle. Back to Top
What is ILD?IDENTATION LOAD DEFLECTION (ILD) is one measure of load bearing and is expressed in pounds load per 50 sq. inches at a given percentage deflection of the latex core. To obtain the value, 50 sq. inc. circular plate is pushed into the latex core top surface, stopping at a given deflection and reading a load or a scale. For example, a 25% ILD of 30 means that it takes 30 lbs. load to compress a 4" thick piece of latex core to a 3" thickness. The higher the load, the firmer the latex core. In mattress selection, the ILD will usually be selected based upon a combination of user weight with preference for firm or soft mattresses. Heavier users need a higher ILD otherwise the mattress will start to hammock under their weight and will not last as long. The King Koil Natural Response Comfort Choice Latex mattress solves the problem of deciding what is right for you by having a unique design which provides choice of firmness-- firm on one side, plush soft on the other. They do this by sandwiching different ILD layers into one mattress- should you find one side too firm, simply flip the mattress to the softer side. Click here for more info. Back to Top
